Home Exterior Cleaning and Maintenance Tips

On Fridays, I work on maintaining the exterior of our home.  I do quite a bit more in the spring, summer, and fall than I do in the winter, but I work regularly to keep tasks from becoming overwhelming.  Read on for the schedule I try to follow to keep my home and yard in shape.

Daily Maintenance

  • Spring, summer:  Water the garden.
  • Summer:  Harvest food from the garden.
  • Pick up any limbs that have fallen in the yard.

Weekly Maintenance

  • Fertilize garden and plants.
  • Sweep the porch, steps, patio, and garage.
  • Pour vinegar in the driveway and sidewalk cracks to kill any weeds.
  • Weed eat/edge the driveway and sidewalk.
  • Weed eat around the fence, outside toys, trees, etc.
  • Weed the flower beds and garden.
  • Spring:  Trim hedges.
  • Fall:  Rake the leaves.
  • Spring, summer, fall:  Mow the lawn.
  • Clean the sidewalk.
  • Set out yard waste (leaves, limbs, cuttings, etc.) for pick-up.

Monthly Maintenance

  • Trim trees.

Bi-Annual Maintenance (Spring and Fall)

  • Clean out the dryer vent.
  • Clean the gutters.
  • Have the HVAC system maintained.
  • Have the termite inspection completed.
  • Pressure wash the drive, sidewalk, walls, porch, etc.
  • Clean the garage windows.
  • “Patch” the mulch in the flower beds.
  • Fertilize azaleas.  (I use Hollytone.)
  • Use weed and feed on the grass.
  • Overseed the fescue grass and “sprig” the St. Augustine grass.  (We have both, one in the front yard, one in the back.)
  • Inspect the roof.
  • Late fall:  Cover outdoor faucets for the winter.
  • Late fall:  Prep the water pump for winter.

Notes

  • We have very few trees to clog up our gutters.  In fact, if our neighbor didn’t have a huge oak tree, we wouldn’t have any leaves in our gutters at all.  If you have a lot of tall trees, you’ll likely need to clean your gutters more often.
  • I use a Rubbermaid garbage can for yard waste pick-up rather than yard waste bags.  Doing so is less expensive and less wasteful.
